When was the last time you had to run to the store? We rely heavily on the convenience and efficiency of chain stores like Walmart and Target across the country.

With the evolution of grocery pick-up and amazon prime, shopping has become quicker, highly systematic, and impersonal. While life these days seems bustling and hectic, a quicker shopping process might seem like a no-brainer. But, there is actually value in a slower, personal, and more intimate shopping experience.

Back in the 1800s, the picture of shopping looked a lot different than today. Instead of Walmart, pioneers had what was called a “general store.” This was one of the only options to purchase goods such as clothing material, spices, tins, guns, and anything else needed. The general stores were also a meeting area for people in their towns, and oftentimes even doubled as a home for the people who owned and ran a general store. People also used these locations to share news and spend time with one another, playing games and enjoying each other’s company. The owner’s relationship with the customers was much closer than in the present day. People often had the option to trade as opposed to buying goods because of sparse funds during this time frame.

Pioneers traded things like crops or handmade goods. The general store was a true gem that not only provided goods but maintained meaningful relationships with its customers and served as much more than just a store.

While the array of shopping processes and the conveniences that Walmart, Amazon, and Target no doubt hold a special place in our 2021 hearts, you might wonder what it’s like to experience shopping pioneer style. Thankfully, Pioneer Village, located in Minden Nebraska, just off interstate 1-80, is home to a historical general store. Pioneer Village decided to re-create exactly what a general store would have looked and felt like in the 1800s. And not only do they offer an exact replica of an old-fashioned general store but it’s also filled with real artifacts from the pioneer days. When you walk up to the general store, you’ll be greeted with a replica of the storefront, and as you walk in you can experience what it would be like to shop as a pioneer. You’ll see a huge variety of goods like lamps, furniture, dishes, seed, gun material, washing machines, and even more. Pioneer village is home to artifacts you’ll find nowhere else, and an experience you and your family will never forget. While the general store is appealing to most and an experience of its own, Pioneer Village has so much more to offer than just the general store. It has a church, a schoolhouse, a blacksmith shop, and even more for a full experience. You can find over 28 buildings and 50,000 items. Pioneer village’s current hours going into winter are 9 am-4 pm, making it a perfect excursion for any road trip heading east or west or an excellent weekend getaway.

Minden and surrounding areas are home to multiple hotels and a campground for those traveling. The history that pioneer village holds is a priceless experience for everyone. So step away from the hectic world of consumerism for a day and enjoy the simplicity and endless stories that pioneer village has to tell through its general store and several other buildings and artifacts.

Have you ever wondered how fires were put out or what equipment and stations looked like back in the 50’s? Well, this firehouse will give you a blast to the past. I’ll tell you right now the technology has come a long way, specifically in the fire department. The strategies that were used to extinguish fires back then are laughable in today’s society.

Starting off on the engine portion of things, back then the fire trucks used a 310-horsepower engine with 12 cylinders. Compare that to today’s fire truck engines which average about 500-600 horsepower and 12-liter 6-cylinder engine which not only makes it so the truck can handle the heaviness but also is more fuel efficient. While they once looked like a horse and buggy, they have now transformed into full on armored vehicles.

The equipment that firemen used were also drastically different as well. We have all seen scenes from a movie where buckets are used to put out fires, well back then this was a normal practice. They would use leather fire buckets and pass them through a line of people that were close to the fire to try and extinguish it. This practice was later terminated by the steam pump which not only provides more water but also adds high pressure to the flame. In fact, in the fire house at Pioneer Village there is the only intact horse drawn steam fire engine. This horse drawn steam engine may have been used in the great Chicago fire of 1871. Where in that fire over 17,000 buildings were destroyed, and hundreds of people lost their lives. Not only has the technology in equipment been helpful in fighting fires but technology in general made the job a lot easier. In the 1900’s, firemen used a torch which they would use to navigate through dark times in a fire. That was later replaced by a flashlight. This new technology has also helped with communication, fire horns were a big part of letting people know about the fire, which came in handy. Nowadays all firefighters carry a walkie talkie to make internal communication much cleaner.

With all this equipment there needs to be a place to store all of it, that is where the most important part is – the firehouse. Fighting fires in small rural areas is a tough task for most, you are rewarded with the luxuries that bigger cities get. You also need to be always ready, if you are slacking off it could mean the downfall of a community. This is why firehouses are so important, a “home base” for firefighters to be prepared from sunup to sundown and beyond.. All of these amazing rare antique items are a must see if you want to learn about our nation’s history not only in firefighting but also the way technology has progressed through the years. We hope you are able to visit these amazing features out here at Pioneer Village in the near future!

The “home made of grass” here at Harold Warp’s Pioneer Village happens to be Minden Nebraska’s very own Warp family sod house, where Harold Warp, founder, and collector for the historical museum, was born and raised.

The house was constructed using many long ribbons of the easily available, thick grass known as sod (specifically bluestem sod), which were placed overlaying each other and held together by clay from a nearby river. Due to the material, sod houses couldn’t be two floors. They are also much more vulnerable to rain damage than houses made of stone or wood and often had to be repaired, so a small-sized house was preferred because it meant spending less time on repairs. Warp’s sod house has only two rooms: one for sleeping, and one for cooking and eating.

While the Warp’s true sod house attracted some rattlesnakes, many Nebraskans would create a half sod house, half dugout which rattlesnakes liked even more. Harold notes in his book that when rattlesnakes dared enter their sod house, they would keep their rattles as a record of how many they had seen. They often put the cloth over the window openings to protect them from the outdoor elements. The best thing about sod houses was that they were very insulated. So, they remained warm in the winter and cool in the summer. They used buffalo horns on the wall as hooks for clothes.

The best part about this sod house is that in this museum building, you can read Warp’s very own handwritten experience in the house and descriptions of items that they used every day. For example, he recalled his mother sitting at the table, which still sits in the house at the museum, knitting mittens by the light of a kerosene lamp and eating their meals together there with his 8 siblings and his parents. On a sadder note, he recalls his father’s passing, in which he tells his wife to look in the “Skatol”, a piece of furniture his father had built and named after immigrating, in which there was $600 to build a bigger, more effective shed for the cows. He explained in detail exactly how he wanted it to look. Harold Warp then recalls that his father passed peacefully following this declaration as if it had been part of the plan all along. Like any home, Harold Warp experienced loving, fulfilling childhood memories, as well as moments of heartbreak and loss. His just took place in a time where homes were made of clay and grass rather than wood and glass. It was where he discovered the invention that put him and his family on the map, Flex-O-Glass.

These little details and stories throughout history are why he chose to create Pioneer Village; he just couldn’t bear to see his past get torn to shreds in the name of innovation. So there at that amazing museum is where his childhood home sits, waiting to tell all its stories about the things that it has seen to those who dare to venture into moments throughout history.

Grandparents are great. They shower you with unconditional love, buy you the best presents, and tell you the best stories. Stories about how things were different when they were children and how much everything has changed throughout the years. Stories that are passed down that can be shared with the new generation.

Now imagine being able to take a step back in time, a time where either your grandparents or even great-great-great-grandparents were once kids. Imagine being able to see and sit down in a classroom that was once operated as a schoolhouse more than 100 years ago. Sounds pretty cool huh? Well, you’re in luck!

Here at Harold Warp Pioneer Village, located in Minden, Nebraska only about 20 miles away from the City of Kearney, one can experience the atmosphere of this vintage schoolhouse that had once been used during the late 19th century and the early 20th century.

History of the Country Schoolhouse Exhibit

Back in the late 19th century, it was common to see one-roomed school houses across the U.S as it was seen as a symbol of progress for pioneer settlements. Since at first, settlements started out small, the children were taught by one of the township’s family’s wives until more people came to settle in the area. Once more people arrived, they saw having a schoolhouse would be needed and necessary.

In 1877, School District 13 had thirteen children being taught in the John Barnes home for a cost of $68. A couple of years later, “A Sod school was built in 1879 at a cost of $21.98 and in 1881 a floor was added that cost $16.42”. This information is stated in the book “A History of Man’s Progress from 1830 to the present”, written and compiled by museum founder, Harold Warp.

That number of thirteen pupils expanded up to 85 students in 1900. The number steadily declined over time and by the time it was 1920 the class size had shrunk down to 32. As the years passed and the year 1937 approached, it was decided by the local community by a vote to send the children to Minden for school since there weren’t that many kids left in the district.

Since the kids left to go to school in Minden, the school building was left abandoned there for the next eleven years.

How the Grom School ended up at Pioneer Village

During this period, it was not uncommon to see old equipment and buildings being put up for auction because of the development of new and better equipment. This is exactly what happened to the schoolhouse in 1948 by a vote of the district.

The building ended going to the biggest bidder which winded up being Harold Warp, who attended the school and couldn’t bare to see it destroyed. Warp bought the Grom Schoolhouse in 1948 which included all the records that the school had. In 1952 he moved the schoolhouse to Pioneer Village. A unique fact about the schoolhouse is that it has been left the same since the last day of class that the students finished for the term in 1938. All the books they have used were put back onto their racks where they remain today. Now one can take a step back into the past and get to have a glimpse of how life once was.

It is hard to think what farming was like back in the 1800s when farmers had to use four horses

and a gang plow. Fast forward to today, it’s even more difficult to fathom how much farm equipment has

evolved and made work easier. Harold Warp’s Pioneer Village in Minden, NE helps tell the story of how this major transition happened.

At age 21, Harold Warp started a plastic film business with two of his brothers. He grew this product

into other ideas such as plastic food wrap and plastic bags. Warp has over 30 patents in plastics.

With this newfound wealth, he decided to start investing in the future of Nebraska by saving its

past. Warp had a passion for preserving historic items and buildings in his hometown of Minden.

Today, the Pioneer Village complex includes 26 buildings and 50,000 items from history containing

over 100 early farm tractors. To Warp’s credit, many of these tractors were obtained when they

were less than 50 years old. This goes to show his love for historical items. These antique

tractors are coming up on the century mark, so let’s explore what Pioneer Village’s unique

farm department has to tell us about a couple of these storied machines.

Pioneer Village has multiple old tractors that are steam-powered! Most commoners and even folks with

farming backgrounds don’t know that steam-powered tractors ever existed. But you can find them right

here at Pioneer Village. One of these models is the 1919 Frick 12-25. This tractor was rated as a 3-plow

while being able to pull 2,500 pounds at 2.5 miles per hour.

Another notable tractor preserved by Harold Warp is the 1929 Rock Island – Heider G2 15-25. This

tractor features a 4-cylinder engine that ran around 750 rpm. It was advertised to have seven different

speeds up to 4mph which was unheard of during this era of tractors. On top of all these crazy facts,

this was one of the last tractor models produced by Rock Island Plow Co. because they were

soon purchased by J.I. Case Co.

Recently, in 2014, Pioneer Village crafted a building just to show off its tractors while keeping

them inside and out of the elements. The experience of visiting Harold Warp’s collection of antique

tractors in the tractor building may be different for all, but it will certainly be a learning experience

for most. Agriculture has always played a major role in the history and upbringing of Nebraska.

Chances are that most people have farming ancestors or current relations to farmers. Wouldn’t it

be exciting to see what kind of tractors were made in their era or maybe even tractors they would’ve used?

Harold Warp’s Pioneer Village is one of the nation’s leaders in well-preserved

antique tractors in one location. Not to mention they are also the nation’s leader in the overall

collection of American history! It couldn’t be more convenient! Come and witness the

powerful, yet fragile machines that shaped the Midwest.
